Gumbo

After staying up til 3am on Sunday on top of a loooooong day at the lake and a looooooong night in the emergency room and then having to get up early and work outside all day, Warren decided to stay up late again Monday making gumbo.

It was really quite crazy.

While he was making the rue he kept asking me questions like, "Do you think I should add some corn starch?"

I was like, "Dude, why are you asking me?"

He laughed and said, "I don't know."

He was clearly exhausted, but I guess cooking relaxes him. Or something. I was actually a little worried about him using a giant knife to cut onion, green pepper, celery, and garlic into very tiny pieces, but he managed to do so without a hitch.

We bought some sausage at the store. Warren dug through the freezer and decided to throw in some turkey breast and shrimp.

At about 10:00pm I heard him moaning and cussing. "I burnt the rue," he reported.

"Do you need help?" I asked as I walked into the kitchen.

"I think I can just rinse the meat off and start over," he said.

And he did.

We couldn't find any fresh okra, so he had to use frozen. Not frozen pieces but entire frozen okra. He defrosted them, chopped them, and then put them in the blender.

I could hear him laughing over the whir. "This is going to be some sticky gumbo," he said. "It might be more like Cameroonian stew. I better make some fufu."

I had to go to bed before he ever finished. Then I had practice on Tuesday and didn't get to eat any. Finally, Wednesday at work, I had a bowl. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. It was a little sticky, but still very very tasty. Even sleep deprived, Warren is amazing.
